The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. A densely packed, powerful red, with smoldering graphite underscoring the black currant and black raspberry wafting alongside mesquite smoke. Anise and lavender add pretty high tones, but this is mostly about dark, simmering power. Give this a few years -- at least -- to unfurl. Best from 2027 through 2042. 135 cases made, 10 cases imported.

Crafted entirely from Petite Serine planted on granite soils facing south, the 2022 Ermitage Les Dionnières is the most perfumed and ethereal wine in the Ferraton lineup, soaring from the glass with aromas of espresso, licorice, dark berries, flowers, mulberries and dark cherries. Full-bodied, precise and tense, it's layered and enveloping with a multidimensional core of fruit and an ample and perfectly balanced mid-palate enhanced by velvety, powdery tannins. Despite a slightly assertive tannic frame—which should mellow with time in the bottle—attributed to the year’s dryness and defoliation, this is a precise, satiny and sensual wine with a long, saline finish. It matured with 22% new oak.

Colour: Bright, deep ruby colour. Nose: Complex with aromas of flowers (violet), small red fruit, spices and liquorice. Palate: Powerful wine, aromas of small red fruit and liquorice. Very long lasting wine with a lot of elegance.
