Derived from 50-year-old massal selection Pinot Noir complemented by 5% Chardonnay, Savart’s 2020 Villers-aux-Noeuds Le Mont Benoit was disgorged in November 2024 with a dosage of 3.5 grams per liter. Vinified in 500-liter barrels, 60% new, it wafts from the glass with a deep bouquet of peach, tangerine, pear and brioche. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, layered and intense, with a bright spine of acidity and concluding with a searingly chalky finish. While this cuvée has shown some inconsistency, particularly in warmer vintages, this year’s performance is solid, making it one of the highlights of the portfolio. Nevertheless, it is advisable to enjoy it within 5-7 years of disgorgement.

The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.
