Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Chile has a long and rich wine history which dates back to the Spanish conquistadors of the 16th century, who were the first to discover that the wonderful climate and fertile soils of this South American country were ideal for vine cultivation. It has only been in the past forty or fifty years, however, that Chile as a modern wine producing nation has really had an impact on the rest of the world. Generally relatively cheap in price,Whilst being widely regarded as definitively 'New World' as a wine producing country, Chile has actually been cultivating grapevines for wine production for over five hundred years. The Iberian conquistadors first introduced vines to Chile with which to make sacramental wines, and although these were considerably different in everything from flavor, aroma and character to the wines we associate with Chile today, the country has a long and interesting heritage when it comes to this drink. Chilean wine production as we know it first arose in the country in the mid to late 19th century, when wealthy landowners and industrialists first began planting vineyards as a way of adopting some European class and style. They quickly discovered that the hot climate, sloping mountainsides and oceanic winds provided a perfect terroir for quality wines, and many of these original estates remain today in all their grandeur and beauty, still producing the wines which made the country famous.

Valle Central

Chile is a fascinating country when it comes to wines and viticulture, and by far the most internationally renowned wine region in the country is the Valle Central. This expansive valley is located close to the Chilean capital of Santiago, and stretches between the Maipo Valley and Maule Valley, a long, winding fault through the mountainous regions of the country which is now almost completely covered by vineyards producing wines of exquisite character. The region itself may well be associated with the 'New World' of wines, but in actual fact, vineyards have been cultivated around the Maipo valley since the 16th century, when settlers from Europe brought vines across the ocean with which to make sacramental wines. A wide range of grape varietals thrive in the hot climate of Valle Central, from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines the country is most famous for, to Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Carmenere.

Fermented in large-format open-top lagar with 20% stem inclusion, the 2021 Pereira Vineyard Syrah is gorgeous on the nose, with a definitively peppery, dark-fruited and elegantly floral bouquet that develops an iodine overtone and floral accents with time in the glass. The palate is sumptuous and enveloping yet contains no excess weight, displaying an umami-like richness that persists through the layered, stony finish. A classically-informed expression of Syrah that manages to strike a midpoint between assertive and refined, this should evolve very well in the cellar.

The 2021 Syrah Pereira Vineyard - Lot 118 hails from Cauquenes in the Maule Region. Aged two winters in oak barrels, this purplish wine unfolds alluring aromas of blackberry and raspberry, along with hints of pepper and rosemary. Dry and silky, the taintly rich and concentrated palate ofters an ample and fatty mouthteel. It's a pristine combination of a great cold vintage and the ripe Cauquenes terroir. Simply delicious.

• 100% Syrah. • Sourced from D.O. Empedrado, Maule Valley. • 150+ years-old originario-farmed grafted vines planted on sandy granitic soils covering cracked, decomposed granite bedrock. • Hand harvested. • Fermented with indigenous yeast in conical fermenters, with caps punched down by hand. • Lignified stems re-introduced after crush (to avoid carbonic maceration) about 20%. • Aged for two years in neutral, old barrels.
