The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. This is the top-end wine from Carlo Ferrini. The Giodo 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows notable elegance and grace, especially in this classic vintage. It holds back at first, inviting patience, which bodes well for its long-term aging potential. There is complexity and beauty, and the wine clearly separates itself from the mid-tier "Prètto" bottling, as expected. Giodo moves with delicate footprints, and on returning to an open bottle the next day, the streamlined mouthfeel and lasting freshness became even more apparent, reflecting both the classic nature of the year and the maturity of the vineyards. Production has been significantly reduced to 8,500 bottles, compared to 16,000 bottles in 2020, with all fruit sourced from 20-year-old vines and selected barrique by barrique to create a wine of depth and precision.

This red starts out supple in texture, gaining depth midpalate before ending with a layer of chewy tannins. Flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, iron and macchia occupy the space between.
