While ‘Mon Village’ is a balanced picture of Le Mesnil, Mussettes is a more intense, chalky and low-yielding plot that yields tigher, more compact wines that start to reveal themselves with more age. With 52 months on lees this is now opening up, with powerful salted lemon, cooked orange citrus and some sweet roasted spice notes from barrel ageing. It carries some of the pithy, punchy ripeness of the 2020 vintage here, and remains tightly-coiled and racy – just another year or two of ageing will see this reach perfect balance.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Disgorged in November 2025 with a dosage of two grams per liter, the 2020 Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Musettes, from an east-facing site planted in 1971 and vinified in both wood and stainless steel, has turned out very well. It offers an aromatic profile of Granny Smith apple, jasmine and lemon oil, mingled with oyster shell and a faint hint of buckwheat. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, tightly wound and incisive, with a crisp core of fruit laden with bracing acidity, before concluding in a long, saline finish. Originating from deep soils, it registers around 13% final alcohol in the sunny 2020 vintage.
