The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets displays pretty aromas of cassis and blackberries that mingle with wood smoke, spices, rich soil and dried flowers in a complex bouquet that’s deftly framed by toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with good concentration and depth and a fine-grained chassis of tannin.

Varietal

Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Appellation

Cote De Beaune

The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

Vinous Media

The 2017 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is the first vintage to be vinified "intégrale". It has a very pure bouquet with black cherries and blue fruit, although I find that the Les Fremiets has more identification of place by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well balanced with seductive pure dark cherries, blackcurrant and discrete spicy notes towards the poised finish. Once the aromatics express their place of origin this will be very fine.

Burghound

A whiff of spiced herbal tea sits atop the array of naturally exotic red and dark pinot fruit where an interesting hint of tangerine skin lurks in the background. The round, rich and very seductively textured medium weight flavors brim with minerality on the complex and beautifully persistent finish. This moderately firm effort possesses unusually good density for the vintage and is a wine to consider.

Winery Notes

Hue: Bright ruby red. Nose: Fresh and mineral – red berries – strawberries - cherries. Palate: Mineral attack – fine freshness - Complex – elegant – great length - saline.
