Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Australia

Whilst most of Australia consists of arid deserts and dense bushland, the oceanic coasts to the south of the country have a terrain and climate ideal for vine cultivation and wine production. It took several decades of failed attempts at the end of the 18th century in order to produce vines of a decent enough quality for making wine, but since those first false starts, the Australian wine industry has continued to grow and grow. Today, wine production makes up for a considerable part of the Australian economy, with exports in recent years reaching unprecedented levels and even overtaking France for the first time ever. Whilst the greatest successes in regards to quality have been the result of the Syrah grape varietal (known locally as Shiraz), Australia utilizes several Old World grapes, and has had fantastic results from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and more. As the Australian passion for locally produced wine continues to develop, wineries have begun experimenting with a wider range of grape varietals, meaning that nowadays it isn't uncommon to find high quality Australian wines made from Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier, amongst many others.

Barossa

The Barossa Valley in Australia is one of the New World's most interesting wine regions, having been established in the late 19th century by German settlers. The region benefits enormously from the relatively temperate climate, which ranges from being hot on the lower parts of the valley, to quite cool as the altitude increases on the valley slopes. Barossa Valley produces mostly Shiraz wines, and has become one of the key Australian regions for this distinctive grape varietal which has gone on to be a major grape for the Australian wine industry. Despite suffering from a poor reputation in the mid 20th century, by the 1980s, plenty of unique and forward-thinking wineries set up in Barossa to take advantage of its excellent climate, and set about producing the excellent red and white wines which the region is famed for today.

Medium garnet in color, the 2010 Shiraz Hill of Grace reveals a slightly reticent yet beguiling nose of kirsch, dried mulberries and plum preserves with nuances of star anise, potpourri, cloves, dusty earth and menthol. Medium to full-bodied with youthfully taut, mouth-filling perfumed berry preserves and exotic spice flavors, the fruit is well framed by rounded, polished tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with incredible length. It could still benefit from 2-4 years in bottle before entering its drinking window but is already stunning.

The 2010 vintage will be remembered as one of the most perfect renditions of this single site planted to vines dating back to 1860. The signature spice and sage leaf are here. It's bursting with an array of dark brown spice aromas and pepper. The fruits run from raspberry to deep blackberry, cassis and blueberry fruits. Blue plums too. The palate is immensely smooth and soft. It floats with richness yet lightness. The balance is superb and the finish runs so long and deep. It goes on seemingly endlessly, saturated in old vine Shiraz flavour yet perfectly poised. This is the Eden Valley equivalent of Burgundy's Le Chambertin, a a bottomless well of flavour, elegant yet profoundly powerful and the finest release yet in a superb run of recent vintages. First made in 1958, Australia’s most famous single vineyard wine was originally planted during the 1860s by Nicolaus Stanitzki, a Henschke ancestor. A fine, intricate web of tannins harnesses equally intricate layers of flavour which build steadily. Juniper, dried herbs, liquorice, charcuterie and a hint of eucalyptus is filled out by sweet, juicy briar on the attack, creamy, mocha-edged framboise to the mid-palate and deep set, very persistent blackcurrant. Very long, and very fluid.

This embryonic 2010 Shiraz Hill of Grace is classically proportioned and built for the long haul. It shows wonderful intensity, precision and fruit focus as blackberry, graphite, black olive and coal fire aromas slowly emerge in the glass - each perfectly proportioned. It's then firm and compact, still tightly wound with a deep reserve of muscular tannins that drive an exceptionally long, drying and sustained finish. This is a benchmark vintage.

Is this the Yin to Grange's Yang? The wines are completely different, yet almost always destined to be discussed together. The 2010 HoG is aromatic and bright, with raspberry and cranberry fruit notes, hints of mint and a pinch of peppery spice. It's full-bodied, but with elegant, supple tannins that ease gently into a long, crisp finish. Drink now–2030.

Dark crimson in color, with deep garnet hues. A concentrated array of aromas of mulberry, blackberry and dark plum indicate the richness to come, while savory and complex notes of charcuterie, cedar, sage and five spice tease the senses. Plush and velvety on the palate, the wine has intense fruit concentration with plum, red currant, blackberry and anise flavors, yet an enchantingly elegant and refined structure. Layers of silky tannins reveal the impressive depth of the wine before giving way to an incredibly long finish.
