Just over 1ha of vines was planted almost 70 years ago here, across the Route Nationale from Mazoyères, by Laurent Lignier’s grandfather. The fruit ripens well and after fermentation, with about 20% whole clusters, gentle punching down and ageing in cask (20% new), the result has an evocative cherry fruit, with a pronounced mineral/saline character and a silky, lush texture. Marvellous.

91-93 The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées comes from 1.02 hectares of vines, a massale selection planted by Laurent Lignier's grandfather just after the war. It has a complex bouquet that defies its Village Cru status thanks to the venerability of the low-yielding vines, mineral-infused black fruit, a touch of graphite and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with good concentration. Quite structured black fruit laced with graphite towards the finish. Excellent - but serious!

90-92 Aromas of ripe plum, spice, damp earth and the sauvage are trimmed in admirably discreet wood. There is fine richness and volume to the sleek, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors that are quite saline in character, all wrapped in a relatively powerful, palate coating and long if mildly rustic finish. This too is an impressive villages and recommended.

89-91 Another of Lignier's more serious communal bottlings is the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated and youthfully tightly wound wine that's evocative of plums, cassis, rich soil and dark chocolate. This will reward some bottle age.
