92-94 Bursting with aromas of cherries, rose petals, ripe berries and orange rind, the 2018 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (négoce) is medium to full-bodied, lively and supple, its ample core of succulent fruit concealing melting tannins. Elegant and exuberant, this will drink well young. Lignier explains that the Mercier family’s parcel of Griotte-Chambertin is leased to both Ponsot and Leclerc in metayage, some of which the Merciers take in grapes and sell to Laurent Lignier.

91-93 The 2018 Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is the fifth vintage from purchased fruit under the Lignier label. It has a rather closed, sultry bouquet that does not quite shift into fifth gear. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, a svelte texture and candied red fruit mixed with blood orange and marmalade. It finishes with the style I would like to see develop on the nose.

91-93 This is restrained to the point of being all but mute and it requires aggressive swirling to reveal the reluctant aromas of spice, red and dark currant and subtle floral nuances to reveal themselves. The refined, pure and elegant flavors exude a discreet minerality that adds a bit of lift to the firm, long and mildly warm finish that displays a touch of bright acidity.
