Very pronounced and wonderfully complex nose of persimmon, egg yolk, cinnamon, tarte tatin, caramel, mango pastry, apricot tart and spice box. The full-bodied palate feathers a fine line between sheer power, luscious dried fruit and laser-guided acidity. Very long and intense on the finish. Drink now or hold.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Reminiscent of aged white Burgundy, this shows a rich panoply of quince paste, shortbread and honeycomb accented by white truffle, licorice root and chamomile tea. The fine bead melts like flakes of fleur de sel on the palate, working with the mandarin orange peel acidity to sculpt this rich, focused Champagne. Fascinating.

The new, flamboyant rendition of Selosse’s NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Initial is based on the 2019 vintage, incorporating reserve wines from 2018 and 2017, and was disgorged in April 2025 with a dosage of 2.7 grams per liter. Readers will by now be aware that it originates predominantly from the lower-lying south-facing sites (with a minority oriented eastward), where the topsoil is richer in clay and the chalk bedrock more fragmented than in the higher-altitude parcels that produce Version Originale. Leaping from the glass with aromas of orange peel, peach, dried apricot and toasted bread mingled with beeswax, it is a full-bodied, rich and concentrated wine built around a muscular core and underpinned by ripe yet vibrant acidity, culminating in a long, saline finish. This cuvée is drawn from Avize and Cramant, with a small proportion from Oger, and is typically disgorged several times a year.

The NV (2019) Extra-Brut Initial is classy, elegant and polished. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and chalk all grace the palate. More than anything else, I am so impressed with the quality and texture of the mousse. This is a gorgeous Initial, one of the finest in recent memory. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 24, 2025.

Lovely intense and invitingly rich baked bread aromas lead to a very dry, ripe, rich and powerful palate. Oxidative, fat and autolytic, it has a savoury and honeyed character that's both exotic and hedonistic. There's good mineral acidity to keep the show firmly on the road, but it's not the main component here, and it shows fabulous length on the finish. Definitely a fizz for food.
