The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru, over towards the Santenay side, usually takes longer to ripen. The nose is well balanced with fine delineation, touches of honeysuckle and pressed white flowers. The palate is well balanced with a lovely white peach and white chocolate opening, fine salinity, very poised and tensile towards the finish. Superb.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

La luxe. This wine is perfectly charming, but it must be said that it is fatter and richer than its stablemates. The texture is dense and ripe; it lacks a bit of the finesse of the other wines in the cellar, yet it is impressive all the same, with a ripe apple fruit and notes of hazelnut and almost an edge of honey.

Pretty, and distinctly floral-suffused aromas include those of citrus rind and white fleshed fruit. The very rich and generously proportioned middle weight flavors possess plenty of sappy dry extract before terminating in a powerful and borderline tannic bitter lemon-inflected finish. This would also benefit from at least a few years of keeping.
