Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Austria is a fascinating and ancient wine producing country, which once was heralded by the royal families and aristocracy of Europe as one of the finest and most important centers of viticulture in the world. Indeed, the wines of this central European country are home to many of the most surprising and seductive wines available today, and the eastern region of Burgenland is perhaps one of the finest regions Austria has. Whilst most of Austria is renowned for its off-dry and flavorful white wines, Burgenland is home to the country's red wine producers, with vineyards there being full of Pinot Noir, Zwiegelt and Blaufrankisch grapes, resulting in a wide palate of delicious and juicy reds. This is perhaps due to the relatively large amounts of sunshine and heat the region enjoys each year, and the proximity to one of the country's largest lakes, which helps red grapes reach their full potential.

With a bit of aeration, elegant wild-herb and dried-flower aromas augment the subtle pear fruit. The fine tannins precisely support the superlong mineral finish. From vineyards on primarily slate soils with a small amount of chalk. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Chardonnay Ried Tatschler grows on mica schist with only small portions of limestone and was fermented and aged in one-third new small French oak. A touch of toasted hazelnut appears on the nose and continues on the palate, which shows lovely contour and savory notes of lichen and dried corn husk. Concentrated and powerful, the palate remains absolutely linear and toned, with a beautifully lasting finish that underlines lemon and creaminess. (Bone-dry)
