The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. 90-92 A 50-50 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape les Hesperides had yet to be bottled when tasted last summer. Lively cherries and raspberries mark the nose, but the wine is ripe and full-bodied, broad and expansive on the palate and savory-spicy on the finish.

A solid effort in the vintage, the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Hesperides is based on equal halves of Grenache and Mourvèdre from both pebbly and sandy soils. Aged in mostly stainless steel but some demi-muids, its deeper ruby hue is followed by a serious nose of Bing cherries, blackberries, peppery garrigue, and lavender, with some solid background meatiness. It's medium-bodied, concentrated, has a terrific mid-palate, and sweet tannins. It's an undeniable success in this challenging vintage.

Winery Notes

Black red color with black hints. Thoroughbred and rich nose of black berries, licorice, dark chocolate and oriental spices. Powerful mouth. Sensual tannic structure, dense and velvety. The finale, finely oaky, still reveals new aromas with smoked, roasted and mentholated notes.
