A powerful 2020 for a second wine with blackberry, black olive and blueberry aromas and flavors. Blackcurrants as well. It’s full-bodied yet racy and structured with a long and intense finish. Give it three or four years to soften. Better after 2026.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. Graves is home to renowned châteaux like Haut-Brion, a Premier Cru Classé, exemplifying the region's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character. Looking at the reds, the 2020 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion is flat-out stunning and unquestionably a great wine in its own right. Cassis, black raspberries, tobacco, and sandalwood are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with incredible elegance, fine tannins, and a great finish. In general, 2020 isn't the best vintage for the second wines, but you wouldn't know that from tasting this beauty.

Wine Advocate

A particularly successful effort, the 2020 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, burning embers and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's layered and integrated, with a fleshy core, powdery structuring tannins and good tension.

The Wine Independent

The 2020 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is composed of 55.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 44.7% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out with boisterous scents of black cherry compote, stewed black and red plums, and blueberry pie, followed by suggestions of vanilla pod, dark chocolate, and clove oil with a touch of cedar. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam packed with ripe, seductive black fruit preserves, framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy.

Decanter

Aromatically expressive, with redcurrant, red berry and soft floral flecks with soft cedar edges. Such high and piercing acidity, but then softens quite quickly, sharp then creamy, giving lots of life and then body. Still quite streamlined and focused, a lovely purity to the fruit with mineral-edged tannins giving that soft salinity and saltiness on the palate which also hints at wet stone. Feels nicely complete and accessible with touches of clove and cinnamon. I like the intensity but it's refined, giving a pleasing palate that's full of flavour. Does get a bit hot on the finish, making you question the alcohol. Minerality the final flavour.
