90-92 From around two hectares of vines on the plateau of Pomerol, the core of which are located opposite Lafleur, the 2021 La Fleur de Gay offers up aromas of sweet cherries, red berries, spices, pencil shavings and truffle. Medium to full-bodied, supple and sensual, it’s fleshy and charming, with a textural core of fruit and lively acids. It’s a blend of Merlot with 5% Cabernet Franc.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

A rich, concentrated nose filled with blackcurrant, red and black cherry, tobacco and smoked earth scents on the nose - vividly aromatic. High acidity makes the mouth water with elements of grilled oak, bramble fruit and a hit of juicy salinity on the finish. Smooth and silky tannins support the fruit and give this a sleek and enjoyable feel. Nicley controlled and executed. Harvest 28th September for the Merlot and 1st October for the Cabernet Franc - 95% and 5% of the blend respectively. Ageing in 65% new oak, 35% one-year-old barrels. Axel Marchal consultant.

88-90 The 2021 La Fleur de Gay is much more successful than the La Croix de Gay this year, with more fruit and cohesion on the nose, for a start, while the palate is medium-bodied with fine grip. Not the most complex Pomerol this year, but there is a sense of balance and length.
