There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Maybe you don't want to wait for eight years before opening the bottle, or maybe you've got a bit of money in your pocket and you want to see what all the fuss is about with this Durantou guy in Pomerol - well here you go. This wine has his precision, his deft spinning-the-decks, magician-like ability to measure out tannins, fruit, freshness and sheer joy. It's a second wine in name only, and although the finish is shorter than l'Eglise Clinet, that is setting the bar pretty high.

La Petite Eglise 2015 is 100% Merlot and is medium to deep garnet in color. It wafts out of the glass with a gorgeous perfume of dried roses, chocolate box, licorice, and underbrush, leading to a core of prunes and fruit cake, with a touch of dusty soil. Full-bodied, concentrated and with firm, grainy tannins, the palate is densely packed with flavors of black fruit preserves and finishes long and earthy.

The 2015 La Petite Eglise, which is pure Merlot as usual, has a ripe and quite opulent bouquet that pays little heed to its deuxième cru status. It leaps from the glass with scents of black cherries, blueberry, kirsch and orange blossom, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost viscous opening and a level of concentration that many a self-aggrandizing Pomerol would be proud of. There is great depth here with layers of blackberry, raspberry coulis and light white pepper notes, a gentle grip on the finish and a long aftertaste. What a superb La Petite Eglise, perhaps the best that Denis has ever produced.

The 2015 La Petite Eglise does not quite engage on the nose. Distant hints of red berry fruit laced with allspice and mint emerge from the glass. I am seeking more intensity and comeliness, which actually manifests with time. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and fine-boned, with succulent, ripe tannins. There is a touch of dryness toward the finish but there is more complexity here compared to its peers. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting at Farr Vintners.
