From grand and premier cru vineyards, this Champagne comes from a good but not great vintage. That explains its precocious maturity, its fine toastiness and its great balance between a steely texture and nutty flavors. It is a delicious wine now, very much ready to drink.

Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Region

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Disgorged in February 2017, Lanson's 2009 Brut Vintage Gold Label is more immediate than its 2008 predecessor, bursting from the glass with notes of citrus oil, green apples, fresh peach and wheat toast. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and charming, it's bright and penetrating, but also comparatively giving and approachable for a young-vintage Lanson.

A rich, round Champagne with lots of ripeness and density. Very round and creamy. It’s full and layered with pretty bread dough and softness. Just a hint of freshness at the end. Drink now.

The 2009 Champagne Le Vintage feels sunny and is expressive of the even warmer vintage, with ripe yellow apple, red plum, and crushed stone. It is fleshy and round though it still retains acidity and has notes of chamomile and melon, with a bit of phenolic grip on the finish. Though ripe, it is balanced and drinking well at this stage and over the next 15 years.

Attractive stone fruit, fig, verbena, griotte and quince nose. Quite powerful with green apple and filo pastry flavours. Lovely wine. (Silver) - DWWA 2021

Winery Notes

Dense on the attack, rich and complex flavors of pear, quince, traces of citron, very balanced and a persistent finish.
