Beautiful, ripe and sweet fruit on the nose with plums and hints of cedar and vanilla. Extremely floral, too. Medium body, creamy and refined tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Shows lovely balance and harmony for the vintage. A blend of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. Second wine of Château Angélus. Drink after 2022.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The second wine is the 2017 Le Carillon D'Angelus, and as you’d expect (or hope anyway), it tastes like a mini-Angelus with its ripe cassis and black cherry fruits, new leather, and floral aromas and flavors. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, this deep purple-hued, medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated second wine has plenty of upfront appeal yet will no doubt evolve gracefully for 15+ years.

Just first generation fruit, despite the frost, was used for Carillon d’Angelus 2017, which was blended from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet in color, with a touch of purple, it flies out with expressive Morello cherries, black raspberries and potpourri scents, followed by suggestions of cinnamon stick, rosehip tea, and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers soft, rounded tannins and beautiful freshness to support the energetic red and black fruits, finishing with a mineral lift.

The 2017 Le Carillon d'Angélus is airy, open-knit and inviting. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint and dried flowers all grace this very pretty, understated Saint-Émilion. Just as it was en primeur, the Carillon gives the impression of a wine that will drink well early.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Le Carillon d'Angélus delivers notes of warm black plums, wild blueberries and black cherries plus wafts of fallen leaves and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied, the palate has impressive freshness and energy with rounded tannins and a wonderfully pure finish.

More depth and intensity than the No 3, this is the first year that new plots (near Figeac on sands and St Christophe de Barde on clays) were included in Carillon. There is a succulent feel to the wine through the mid palate, plenty of juicy raspberry and strawberry notes. Slightly shorter barrel ageing than 2016 but still 50% new oak.
