The 2022 Château Angelus Carillon brings another level of class and purity, with beautiful cassis, spicy wood, spring flowers, and smoky, tobacco nuances. It’s beautifully textured, has medium to full-bodied richness, and pure, polished tannins. It’s a brilliant second wine from this team that has the class of a Grand Vin.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

These days Carillon d’Angélus is a distinct cuvée with its own cellars, and takes no ‘rejected’ fruit from the Angélus vineyards, so it is a deuxième vin no more. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, from three dedicated parcels of vines in St Emilion which account for 25 hectares (up from just 4 hectares many years ago) of the appellation. The need for more space to accommodate this increased volume is what prompted the building of the new Carillon cellars on the main road towards Castillon. It is vinified in suspended inverted tronconic vats before élevage in 60% new oak and 40% stainless steel cuve (they don’t tend to use second-fill barrels at Angélus) for 14 months. A rather classy nose here, leather wrapped around desiccated blackberry and currant, with fresh nuances of wild flowers, mint and rosemary. A svelte and finely polished start to the palate, very elegant and precise, with finely integrated tannins, and fragrant dark berries, currant and juniper. A juicy presence, with a lovely grip underneath it, fresh acids too, giving it a long and lightly shimmering finish. Top stuff. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

The 2022 Le Carillon d'Angélus has a soft and slightly squidgy nose, redcurrant and strawberry fruit, open-knit and thankfully gaining delineation in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of red fruit, a keen line of acidity with just a little tartness on the graphite-tinged finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.
