There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Minerality is the word here. Crunchy and al dente, this has firm, juicy blue fruit and tannins on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Everything in its place. 55.5% cabernet sauvignon, 38.5% merlot and 6% cabernet franc. Give it two more years to let the complexity unwind, and it will become even longer in two to three years. Drink from 2028.

Scented and expressive on the nose, lots of purple flowers, blackcurrants and mocha aromas. Intense and concentrated on the palate, this has rich blackcurrant and sun-kissed cherry fruit with a really juicy core but edged with sticky liquorice, clove and cedar touches giving this quite a serious feel. Dark and brooding. Tannins are super fine and well integrated, it's the flavours that are more ripe and opulent. Plenty of power and kick, this just needs time to relax a bit more. Great potential for ageing.

The second wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, the 2022 Le Petit Lion is medium to full-bodied, featuring cassis, graphite, crushed stone, scorched earth, and violets. Nicely integrated oak and fine tannins add to its polished balance. Aged in oak barrels, it’s a stunning second wine that should drink well for 15+ years.

The 2022 Le Petit Lion is silky, open-knit and quite gracious, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking over the next decade or so. Floral and spice notes meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit. Le Petit Lion is impeccably balanced throughout.

This is a blend of 55.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38.5% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, the press wine is a confident 18.5% of the total, and the élevage was in 39% new oak. This is dark and brooding on the nose, the fruit focused and fresh, but there is a perfumed, crushed chalk edge to it as well. The palate presents a fine harmony, with dark fruit, rather saline in character, with black olives, currants, black cherry, with a ripe wrapping of tannins buried deep beneath the dark fruit, and only really showing at the end. This shows great substance and savoury depth, and is a good example of a second wine for this vintage. It is worth considering this for medium-term cellaring. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

The 2022 Le Petit Lion has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of cassis and plums mingled with hints of mint, violets and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, it's dense and concentrated, with a bright core of fruit and a penetrating finish.
