A rich and round red with currant, strawberry and citrus character. Full body, creamy tannins and a fruity finish. This shows much more richness and depth in bottle than from barrel. Excellent. Drink or hold.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The Wine Independent

The second wine from Mouton-Rothschild, made by the team of Philippe Dhalluin and Erick Tourbier, this is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. In the glass it presents a dark hue, with a concentrated core of dusty dark cherry. Considering its age I find the aromatics remarkably fruit-driven, with focused layers of damson, black cherry and liquorice. And yet despite this the palate impresses with an incredibly savoury stance, with a medium-bodied and firmly peppery core, with a flourish of acids for backbone coming out in the midpalate. A lovely if rather juicy concentration here, from a classy second wine. Poured from standard bottle.

The 2012 Le Petit Mouton de Rothschild (79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc) shows loads of charcoal, burning embers, a nice hint of dark chocolate and blackcurrants. It is fleshy and medium-bodied, with up-front fruit and density. This second wine of Mouton has certainly gone from strength to strength under the administration of Philippe Dhalluin. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.

This has a lovely core of red and black currant fruit, raspberry coulis and licorice snap notes, lined with brambly but integrated grip and carrying through the sleek, iron-edged finish. A refined version of Pauillac, and sneakily long. Best from 2017 through 2022.
