Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Saint Julien

Saint-Julien, a revered appellation in Bordeaux's Left Bank, epitomizes the finesse and elegance of red Bordeaux wines. Nestled between Pauillac and Margaux, Saint-Julien boasts a remarkable concentration of classified growths, showcasing wines that marry power with refinement. What makes Saint-Julien unique is its well-balanced terroir—gravelly soils, proximity to the Gironde estuary, and a temperate maritime climate. These factors nurture the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, resulting in wines celebrated for their structured tannins, expressive aromatics, and age-worthiness. Saint-Julien's notable châteaux, such as Léoville-Las Cases and Ducru-Beaucaillou, exemplify the region's commitment to quality. The wines exhibit a harmonious blend of dark fruits, cedar, and subtle minerality. Exploring Saint-Julien unveils the essence of Bordeaux winemaking, where tradition and innovation converge to produce wines of timeless allure and sophistication.

Decanter

A crisp, vegetal uplift with integrated richness and ripe intensity. Fine, grippy tannins meet lively acidity and ripe fruit, balanced by a cooling undertone and wet stone. Powerful yet delicately presented, with vibrancy and a persistent finish.

Wine Spectator

An open-knit style, with bright anise and açai notes out front, backed by cassis and crushed cherry fruit flavors. Shows a dusting of vanilla on the finish. Score Range: 88-91

The Wine Independent

The 2016 Les Fiefs de Lagrange is medium to deep garnet colored. It rocks up with ready-to-go scents of Morello cherries, juicy blueberries, and cassis, plus suggestions of charcoal, black olives, and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and tension, featuring plenty of crunchy black fruits and ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with a skip in its step.

Vinous Media

I pulled the trigger on this Deuxiëme Vin, thinking it might be ready to drink. I was wrong. It has an intense blackberry and blueberry nose that, despite decanting, remains quite closed. The palate is surprisingly structured and has real density. There is plenty of potential, but I advise keeping this in the cellar for another two or three years.

Wine Enthusiast

The second wine of Château Lagrange, this has firm tannins and an elegant, ripe structure. The tannins and rich black-currant fruit are generously integrated, offering a rich wine that will develop well over the next few years. Drink from 2023.

Winery Notes

The robe is a deep and intense purply blue, already brilliant and clear. The nose is delicate, full of fruit and white flowers, offering notes of chocolate underlined by hints of vanilla. In the palate, this wine is supple yet not simple, juicy and charming without being light and develops in the mid palate and on the finish to give a solid tanic structure with no hints of harshness. Charm is the dominating characteristic in this already pleasant and approachable second wine. Nevertheless it will express its full potential in a few years.
