This gorgeous effort begins with a notably restrained nose that only reluctantly offers up shy scents of lemon rind, green apple and cool pear. The refreshing and equally cool flavors are strikingly refined and energetic with an exceptionally fine bead to the supporting mousse, all wrapped in wonderfully authoritative, balanced and focused finish that lasts and lasts. This understated and ultra-pure effort is flat out terrific combining power and finesse. This could easily be enjoyed now but a few more years of bottle age will only add to the depth.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Sleek and minerally, this racy blanc de blancs shows good tension and length. Yellow plum, ripe and crisp green apple, and Marcona almond flavors, plus accents of oyster shell, grated ginger and pink grapefruit pith, are tightly meshed as they slowly unfurl on the fine, pointillistic mousse and expand through the lasting finish. The latest release of the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Perle was disgorged in fall 2018 with five grams per liter dosage, and it's a blend of equal parts 2015 and 2014, complemented by some 10% reserve wines. Offering up a lovely bouquet of fresh peach, lemon oil, white flowers and hints of the elegantly nutty complexity to come, the wine is medium to full-bodied and textural but incisive, with a creamy low-pressure mousse, a tight-knit core that needs a little time on cork to unwind and an elegantly chalky finish.

Rated 92 - As readers may recall, the Perle cuvée from Lilbert-Fils is their old vine bottling of Blanc de Blancs that is bottled with a lower pressure than their standard non-vintage Blanc de Blancs Brut NV. It is the house’s most limited release cuvée, as only one hundred and sixty-five cases are produced each year. The current release is a blend of thirty percent 2011, forty percent 2010 and thirty percent 2009 juice. The cuvée is finished with a dosage of five grams per liter. The wine wafts from the glass in a refined blend of lemon, pear, brioche, chalky soil tones, gentle smokiness and a topnote of fresh almond. On the palate the wine is fullish, crisp and very elegant in profile, with a good core, lovely soil signature, light, frothy mousse, bright, nicely buried acids and impressive length and grip on the youthfully complex finish. The lower pressure makes this very, very easy to enjoy out of the blocks, but this wine will also age very well indeed. 2017-2035+. - John Gilman, View From the Cellar
