The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a ripe redcurrant and cranberry-scented bouquet that is full and voluminous. The palate is ripe and sweet with a candied core of strawberry fruit and a long succulent finish. This is a quintessential Charmes-Chambertin in the making, harmonious and poised.

Good bright red. Musky reduction to the wild aromas of raspberry, leather and game. Youthfully imploded on the palate and far less accessible today than the Cazetiers and Estournelles Saint-Jacques, but with a distinct sappiness to the flavors of red berries, brown spices and salty minerality. The superb mounting finish suggests that all this needs is time.

Reduction and pungent wood presently comprise the nose. This is also very supple, round and almost soft though there is good size, weight and yet again, a sense of refinement to the middle weight plus flavors that exhibit a discreet minerality on the balanced and persistent finish that is certainly delicious if not quite as complex as the finest of these Gevrey grands crus.
