Opaque purple color with a dark mineral profile, showing iodine, violets, blue-fruit extract, cassis and a touch of ink. Full-bodied and flavorful yet fresh and seamlessly structured, with masses of close-knit, dusty tannins. Superb finish, combining dense concentration and cerebral austerity. Yet it’s almost opulent, thanks to the incredible depth of its fleshy blue and purple fruit. The ultimate malbec expression from the highest part of Los Chacayes, at around 1,500 meters. Just a baby. Drink from 2030. About 3,000 bottles.

The purple Malbec variety grapes which now grow all over the Old and New Worlds had their origins in France, where they are one of the few grape varieties allowed to be used in the highly esteemed blended wines of Bordeaux. However, it is perhaps the New World Malbec wines which have attracted the most attention in recent years, as they thrive in hot southern climates in ways they cannot in their native country, where the damp conditions leave them highly vulnerable to rot. Malbec grapes are renowned for their high tannin content, resulting in full-bodied red wines packed with ripe, plummy flavors and held in their characteristically dark, garnet colored liquid. In many countries, Malbec is still used primarily as a varietal for blending, as it adds a great level of richness and density to other, lighter and thinner varietals. However, single variety Malbec wines have been greatly on the rise in recent years, with some fantastic results and big, juicy flavors marking them out as a great wine for matching with a wide range of foods.

Derived from the highest-elevation vines planted in Los Chacayes, situated in the subzone known as Manzano, the 2023 Viña Extremas Malbec Los Chacayes is a spectacular example of Uco Valley Malbec that captures the region's slender, incisive and structured character in riveting detail. A deep, inky and vivid color gives way to an expressive, radiantly floral bouquet that gradually develops herbal flourishes and chalky overtones that characterize the area. The mouthfeel combines a racy, tensile core with a punchy, grounded saturation that gives the illusion of a richer wine while remaining remarkably dexterous, culminating in a sturdy, chewy and deeply structural finish that oozes with minerality. The assertive nature of Los Chacayes is on full display here, and I suspect it will benefit from additional time in the bottle to flesh out and congeal.

Winery Notes

• 100% Malbec. • Sourced from a vineyard in Los Chacayes, Uco Valley planted at 1,500m ASL on soils featuring a sandy top horizon with a subsoil of calcareous gravel. • Hand harvested in 20kg bins to keep each bunch intact. • Meticulously hand sorted prior to vinification. • Pressed 30% whole cluster and rest destemmed. • Gravity fed to small concrete vats for fermentation with indigenous yeasts at 26° and 28°C. • Gentle punch-downs to achieve a slow extraction. • Aged 16-months in French oak foudres.
