There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The 2022 Marianova is composed of Syrah and Sangiovese, an unexpected blend. The nose is very pretty and aromatic, with red berries and a hint of peppery spice. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and delicious, it’s all about its crunchy fresh acidity and has ripe tannins as well as a very pretty lifted note of fresh lavender. This is an unexpected but delightful blend to drink over the next 10-12 years, but it sure wouldn’t last long on my table.

The Michele Satta 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Marianova is an equal split of Sangiovese and Syrah, an unconventional pairing that comes together in a compelling and coherent expression. Sangiovese sets the tone with acidity, linearity and focused sharpness on the palate, while Syrah contributes volume, darker fruit tones and natural spice that fill out the mid-palate. Both varieties add layers of savory detail, with hints of grilled herbs and stem-derived spice, shaped by fermentation in cement with 30% whole-cluster fruit and 18 months of aging in amphorae and barrique. Production is limited to 2,500 bottles.

Winery Notes

Aromas of currants, crushed berries and walnuts, as well as chocolate. Full body, juicy tannins and beautiful fruit at the end. A blend of Sangiovese and Syrah.
