The 2023 La Quinta Cruz Mazuelo is stunning, floral, elegant and polished. It was produced with a grape that is supposed to be rustic and produce rustic and earthy wines. It comes from a plot on the eastern slope of the Calvario Mountain in Briones, 1.2 hectares planted in 1986 in a cooler place where the ripeness is slow. It has moderate alcohol, 12.5%, and very good freshness, a pH of 3.3 and 5.5 grams of acidity and fine, chalky tannins. This fermented in stainless steel and matured in concrete and used 500-liter barrels. This could be the finest vintage for this wine. 3,331 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2025.

An extremely attractive nose of dried flowers, with red fruit carrying through to a delicate expression on the medium-bodied palate, alongside a sense of linearity. From a 40-year-old mazuelo vineyard in the Rioja Alta village of Briones. Completely destemmed and aged in 500-liter French oak and concrete. Very distinctive. Drink now or hold.

Planted in 1986 in what is considered the only Briones site capable of fully ripening the variety, the 2023 Mazuelo La Quinta Cruz is distinctly atypical for Rioja. On the nose, white pepper leads, joined by sun-warmed fruit and red berry tones. Freshness and tension are preserved on the palate, where a silky texture is supported by a faint lactic nuance. Stylistically off-center for Rioja—evoking Monastrell aromatically and Garnacha in its palate shape—it is unusual, distinctive and compelling. The vintage makes this wine especially expressive.

Winery Notes

100% Mazuelo (Carignan) from the La Quinta Cruz vineyard, planted in 1986 on a southeastern slope near the Ebro River. The vineyard's diverse soils range from sandy/clay to stony. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel, then aged for one year in a combination of large oak barrels and concrete.
