This is another new red and shows plenty of Corton character with dark berries, light, smoky oak and hazelnuts. Muscular as expected, but not over done. Medium body. Juicy finish. Drink after 2021, but already fascinating to taste.

The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, plums, forest floor and spice that are delicately framed by a deft touch of toasty new oak, the 2017 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a layered and voluminous core, ripe acids, powdery tannins and a long, expansive finish. This is an open-knit but broad-shouldered Clos du Roi that will drink well with minimal bottle age. It's one of the highlights of Olivier Leflaive's red portfolio this year.

Dark and brooding, this red offers a core of black cherry, black plum, earth and iron flavors, framed by toasty oak. Dense tannins set the pace and need time to integrate fully. Features a long, resonant finish. Best from 2023 through 2040. 30 cases imported.

Very generous wood and menthol elements stop just short of overshadowing the underlying aromas of wild red and dark currant, plum, game and spice. The surprisingly forward and very supple middle weight flavors, at least in the context of what would be considered typical for Corton, terminate in a youthfully austere finish that offers reasonable depth and persistence. While this is perfectly good, it’s not distinguished for what it is.
