This shows such gorgeous aromas of cocoa powder, red fruits and berries. Full body, with such pretty silky tannins and an amazing savory, juicy and delicious finish. It makes you want to drink. Superb balance and intensity. So approachable yet structured. More than the second wine of Lafleur.

Varietal Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

The 2010 Pensées de Lafleur is just missing some complexity on the nose compared to its peers, but it seems to awaken in the glass revealing sous-bois, morels and tar-tinged black fruit that are well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, a fine bead of acidity, very well balanced with a deep and pixelated finish. Outstanding. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

Les Pensées comes from a tiny 0.7ha finger of vines that reaches across the vineyard of Lafleur. It has been made since Jacques Guinaudeau took over in 1987, but really took its current shape from the end of the 1990s when a soil study showed just how different this stretch of the vineyard is from the rest. And in the 2010 you see exactly what it can do. Rich and deep in colour, with powerful aromatics and a silky texture right from the start, supple at nearly 10 years old but nowhere near ready to quit. This wine has muscular tannins, as with all good 2010s, ripped through with blackberry and raspberry fruits. Charming without sacrificing depth.

Fleshy and forward, with delicious mulled plum, raspberry and blackberry fruit melded with warm embers, a hint of anise and a long, silky, graphite-tinged finish. Shows lovely range and depth, all within an accessible style. Drink now through 2023.
