91-93 Here too there is just enough wood to merit pointing out on the mildly exotic nose of orange peel, spiced apple and rosemary oil. There is again excellent volume and mid-palate density to the opulent and sappy flavors that also offer fine depth and persistence on the balanced finale. Lovely.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

Colin has three parcels in Chenevottes; one is in the centre of the vineyard, planted to 50-year-old vines, another is higher up on the slope and the last is lower down. Although the terroir is not so well-known, it produces marvellous results here, with very pleasant floral and delicate white fruit aromas. Fermented for 16 months in cask (25% new) and a further three months in tank, this has remarkable elegance and finesse.

90-92 The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru comes across tightly wound on the nose and requires coaxing, very flinty and with light bell pepper notes. You would almost think there is a touch of Sauvignon Blanc in the blend (there isn’t of course.) The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, though it does not quite deliver the verve or the comeliness of the preceeding Vergers and feels straightlaced on the finish. Maybe it has something up its sleeve for later?
