The steep, sun-drenched slope of Clos des Goisses has no equal in Champagne, but its thumping ripeness can be alarming. In some vintages it finds an alluring harmony, and 2007 is one of these. Its voluminous power is met by malic acidity, with control on the finish, projecting the presence of salty chalk minerality with Clos des Goisses confidence. Drinking Window 2022 – 2032.

Varietal

Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Region

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Wine Advocate

Disgorged in October 2023 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, Philipponnat’s 2007 Clos des Goisses—comprising 52% Pinot Noir and 48% Chardonnay—is a commendable effort, though if one were inclined to split hairs, it slightly pales in comparison when tasted alongside the more harmonious 2008 and 2009 vintages. The nose opens with aromas of honeysuckle, golden apple, pastry and warm spices, with a subtle hint of eucalyptus leaf and a faint exotic nuance, suggestive of the botrytis-influenced growing season. On the palate, it is full-bodied and incisive, revealing a generous core of fruit supported by bracing acidity. The wine concludes with a long, citrus-inflected finish.

Vinous Media

A wine of remarkable finesse rather than power, the 2007 Philipponnat Brut Clos de Goisses boasts laser-like acidity and accuracy of flavor that are memorable. One of my favorite Champagnes, Clos de Goisses is usually a powerful bubbly in its youth, but this 2007 is rather politely-styled, almost delicate in fact, in its white fruit and floral aromas and flavors. Best of all, it is still exceptionally young and will last for decades in a proper cellar.

Wine Spectator

A dense, minerally Champagne, statuesque, with firm acidity, offering a chalky overtone to the tightly knit hints of black currant, biscuit and salted almond. Offers a lip-smacking, citrusy finish. Disgorged June 2016. Best from 2019 through 2029. 2,300 cases made, 750 cases imported.

James Suckling

This is extremely dry with a stone and mineral character. Full body, round and rich with dried pineapple, bread dough and apple skin. Strong finish of acidity and dried fruit. Needs food. Disgorged September 2016.
