There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Decanter

Closed at the moment, presenting its tannic face rather than its fruit, and I would suggest waiting another three or four years before things soften up, or give it time in a decanter or jug. The emphasis is on the floral, cassis bud feel of Pauillac Cabernet, emphasising its austere but elegant character. As it opens, carefully sculpted blueberry and blackberry fruit appears, as does the evident finesse and juicy finish. This is high quality but without the density and sheer wow factor of the 2010. Sylvie Cazes was heading things up at this point. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 60% new oak, 40% first wine. A yield of 42hl/ha. Drinking Window 2021 - 2042.

A 2011 with blackberry, dark-chocolate and smoked-meat character. Full body, silky tannins and a long, intense finish. All about balance and polish. Very fine. Needs three to four years to soften. Try in 2017.

A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2011 Pichon Lalande is deep garnet-colored. It springs from the glass with vibrant notes of Morello cherries, blackberry pie, and wild blueberries, plus nuances of dried lavender, cedar, and new leather, with a touch of dried herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant, youthful and refreshing, with nice, ripe, grainy tannins and loads of mineral sparks on the spritely finish.

The 2011 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has an intriguing bouquet with blackberry, briary, mint, juniper and a touch of cassis that lends it a Margaux-like allure. The palate is medium-bodied with a very tobacco-driven entry. Impressive depth, fleshier than expected, probably a Pauillac that will drink sooner than others. The shortcoming is just a slight lack of precision and persistency on the finish. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
