90-91 The 2023 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Hommage à Marguerite is fleshy and charming, bursting with aromas of pear, buttered toast and sweet citrus fruit, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate with a satiny attack and a saline finish. This will offer a broad drinking window.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. 88-90 A more floral but also mildly oakier nose reflects notes poached pear and mineral reduction. The equally round and fleshy, indeed almost creamy, middle weight flavors also exude a subtle minerality on the bone-dry finish that is borderline tart though this does not seem to compromise the length. I’m not entirely certain how this will turn out though my projected range assumes the finish will better harmonize if given a couple of years in a cool cellar.
