The flagship release is the 2006 Champagne Rare, a 70/30 split of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that’s a cellar selection from 8 different Grand Cru vineyards. Tight, backward, and straight-up structured, it offers brilliant notes of stone fruits, toasted brioche, white flowers, and obvious minerality. Needing plenty of air to show at its best, this beauty has a wonderful mid-palate, a racy mousse, and the balance and class to cruise for over two decades in cool cellars.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Very much in line with the vintage: bright, powerful and unmistakably warm. The texture is almost velvety, with a superb balance between a layered citrus profile, dominated by grapefruit, lemon and lime zest and classic notes of brioche, toast and toffee. The acidity is remarkably well-held for such a hot year, keeping everything precise and energetic. It feels right at its peak today but should comfortably stay on this plateau for another 5–10 years.

From a vintage remembered for its June and July heat waves, the 2006 Rare Millésime from magnum—disgorged in 2021 with a dosage of seven grams per liter—is rich and demonstrative. It opens with aromas of candied pear, roasted pineapple, mango and buttered toast. The palate is full-bodied, broad-shouldered and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit, ripe yet vibrant acidity and a long, attractively phenolic finish. A generous, sun-kissed rendition that encapsulates the vintage’s warmth, it remains well-balanced and exudes a compelling charm in its distinctive stylistic register. Drawn from 12 villages harvested in early September, it will age more on its concentration rather than acidity. It’s an entirely different beast compared to the 2007 and 2008 vintages that followed.
