Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Podere le Ripi has done a very good job of organizing its portfolio according to vineyard location and soil type. The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Amore e Magia comes from the Castelnuovo dell'Abate area with unique white-clay soils. I can't think of anywhere else in the appellation with the same soil profile as this. The ground looks like powdery cement. The personality of this wine veers toward sunshine and openness (compared to the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Lupi e Sirene, for example, that has tight, ferrous notes). This wine's unique signature leans toward cherry liqueur, Recioto or raspberry rollup. The wine is rich in phenolics (you taste the texture of the grape skins), and the spicy tannins feel resolved but firm. Production is 14,580 bottles.

Cherry, raspberry and blood orange fruit is aligned with eucalyptus, tomato leaf and mineral flavors in this ripe, succulent red. Assertive tannins take hold, leaving a muscular grip on the finish, yet there's a lasting impression of fruit. Best from 2028 through 2043.

Amore e Magia shows the sun and the Mediterranean climate that can easily be perceived in Castelnuovo. The marriage between Sangiovese and clayey soils is evident here with a wine that makes depth and layering its signature from year to year.
