Benefiting from both the hot, dry Iberian climate as well as brisk Atlantic winds, Portugal is a perfectly situated country for vineyard cultivation and wine production. With a wine making history which stretches back thousands of years, it comes as little surprise that wine plays an important role in the cultural identity and practices of the country. The Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Greeks and the Romans all had a hand in forming Portugal as an important center for wine production, and over the millennia, this resulted in each region of this beautiful part of Europe producing its own distinctive wines easily identifiable and separate from neighboring Spain's. Today, the varied terroir and climate across Portugal allows a great range of wines to be made each year, from the fresh and dry Vinho Verde wines to the famous and widely drunk fortified Port wines, and many in between.
Region
Douro
The undisputed jewel in Portugal's crown is the beautiful wine region of Douro, located along the banks of the river from where it gets its name. The region itself is renowned around the world for its range of wonderfully aromatic fortified wines, as well as a wide variety of still red and white wines made from native grape varietals. Wineries in the Douro region utilize a huge amount of different local grapes for their characterful wines, but generally the most popular are made from Tinta Roriz, a rich and flavorful red wine grape related to Spain's flagship Tempranillo. However, there are plenty of different red and white grape varietals used in the region, all benefiting from the excellent hot weather and mineral rich terroir which characterizes the Douro valleys.

Wine Advocate
The 2018 Quinta da Manoella Vinhas Velhas is a field blend (over 30 grapes) from centenarian vines aged for 20 months in 30% new French oak, and it comes in at 14.8% alcohol. Always subtle and a little understated, this is nonetheless a supercharged version of the regular Manoella Tinto this issue. It retains some of the silky elegance and all of the impeccable balance while adding more concentration and power. It improves and tightens in the glass. It also adds a bit more wood, which shows up here and there. That will get better in time. Although this seems almost approachable today, as its tannins are moderately ripe, its ability to tighten with air and its lack of development demonstrate that it really needs at least a couple of years more in the cellar for better results, preferably more. I'm not convinced yet that this is a great Manoella, but it still has some time and some room to make its case. It is certainly very good, and it has the components to improve notably.

Centenarian vines from a vineyard in the depths of the Pinhão Valley have produced an immense wine. It is dark, with chocolate flavors and powerful tannins. But it does also have a layer of black fruits that will come through strongly. Drink the wine from 2024.
Winery Notes
Full-bodied and deeply concentrated, with a spicy and floral aroma, flavours of blackberry and dark chocolate. Ripe, round and balanced with a notable acidity, firm tannins and a long finish.
