Varietal

Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is Portugal’s most esteemed red grape variety, best known for its role in Port wine and high-quality dry red wines. Indigenous to Portugal, it thrives in the Douro Valley and Dão region, where its low yields and thick-skinned berries produce wines with deep color, intense aromatics, and firm structure. What makes Touriga Nacional unique is its combination of power and elegance. It delivers bold tannins, bright acidity, and concentrated flavors of blackberry, blueberry, plum, and dark cherry, along with floral notes of violet and hints of spice, chocolate, and cedar. Its high tannin and acidity provide exceptional aging potential, making it a key grape in both fortified Ports and full-bodied dry wines. Often blended with varieties like Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional enhances structure and aromatic complexity. It pairs well with grilled meats, game, and hearty stews, making it an outstanding choice for lovers of bold, age-worthy wines.

Country

Portugal

Benefiting from both the hot, dry Iberian climate as well as brisk Atlantic winds, Portugal is a perfectly situated country for vineyard cultivation and wine production. With a wine making history which stretches back thousands of years, it comes as little surprise that wine plays an important role in the cultural identity and practices of the country. The Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Greeks and the Romans all had a hand in forming Portugal as an important center for wine production, and over the millennia, this resulted in each region of this beautiful part of Europe producing its own distinctive wines easily identifiable and separate from neighboring Spain's. Today, the varied terroir and climate across Portugal allows a great range of wines to be made each year, from the fresh and dry Vinho Verde wines to the famous and widely drunk fortified Port wines, and many in between.

Region

Douro

The undisputed jewel in Portugal's crown is the beautiful wine region of Douro, located along the banks of the river from where it gets its name. The region itself is renowned around the world for its range of wonderfully aromatic fortified wines, as well as a wide variety of still red and white wines made from native grape varietals. Wineries in the Douro region utilize a huge amount of different local grapes for their characterful wines, but generally the most popular are made from Tinta Roriz, a rich and flavorful red wine grape related to Spain's flagship Tempranillo. However, there are plenty of different red and white grape varietals used in the region, all benefiting from the excellent hot weather and mineral rich terroir which characterizes the Douro valleys.

Wine Advocate

The 2021 Touriga Nacional has the advantage of the cooler year, and the wine has a little less alcohol, 14%, and more freshness. It's still quite generously oaked but the lower alcohol and higher acidity and more freshness make it come through as better balanced and with more integrated oak. They selected the best grapes, from two plots planted in 1984 and 1985, destemmed and fermented separately with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. It matured in French oak barrels, 85% of them new, for 18 months. 8,150 bottles, 200 magnums and 50 double-magnums produced. It was bottled from January 2024.
