When I tasted the 2024 Infantado Rabigato, it was in a stainless steel tank with some fine lees, waiting to be bottled. The first vintage was 2021, produced from a vineyard in Foz Côa from a cousin in the family and planted after they tasted a white Muxagat Xistos Altos from Mateus Nicolau de Almeida produced with Rabigato. It fermented in barrel and was transferred to stainless steel in March 2025. It has a perfumed and somewhat creamy nose, with a round palate and very good freshness, balance and a faint bitter twist in the finish. It has contained ripeness and 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.4 and close to six grams of acidity. Of course, it has more volume than the years when it was completely unoaked, and it keeps the freshness and balance with more of everything. They planned to bottle it a few days after I tasted it in March 2026; 3,000 bottles were expected.

The undisputed jewel in Portugal's crown is the beautiful wine region of Douro, located along the banks of the river from where it gets its name. The region itself is renowned around the world for its range of wonderfully aromatic fortified wines, as well as a wide variety of still red and white wines made from native grape varietals. Wineries in the Douro region utilize a huge amount of different local grapes for their characterful wines, but generally the most popular are made from Tinta Roriz, a rich and flavorful red wine grape related to Spain's flagship Tempranillo. However, there are plenty of different red and white grape varietals used in the region, all benefiting from the excellent hot weather and mineral rich terroir which characterizes the Douro valleys.

100% Rabigato. From 1 hectare of vines planted from massale selections in 2014 on a hillside of poor, schistous soils in the Douro. The bunches are hand-harvested and destemmed. The berries are fermented in steel tank with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged on its fine lees for 11 months in steel tank. 2021 is the first commercial vintage of the wine.
