Touriga Nacional

Touriga Nacional is Portugal’s most esteemed red grape variety, best known for its role in Port wine and high-quality dry red wines. Indigenous to Portugal, it thrives in the Douro Valley and Dão region, where its low yields and thick-skinned berries produce wines with deep color, intense aromatics, and firm structure. What makes Touriga Nacional unique is its combination of power and elegance. It delivers bold tannins, bright acidity, and concentrated flavors of blackberry, blueberry, plum, and dark cherry, along with floral notes of violet and hints of spice, chocolate, and cedar. Its high tannin and acidity provide exceptional aging potential, making it a key grape in both fortified Ports and full-bodied dry wines. Often blended with varieties like Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional enhances structure and aromatic complexity. Douro

The undisputed jewel in Portugal's crown is the beautiful wine region of Douro, located along the banks of the river from where it gets its name. The region itself is renowned around the world for its range of wonderfully aromatic fortified wines, as well as a wide variety of still red and white wines made from native grape varietals. Wineries in the Douro region utilize a huge amount of different local grapes for their characterful wines, but generally the most popular are made from Tinta Roriz, a rich and flavorful red wine grape related to Spain's flagship Tempranillo. However, there are plenty of different red and white grape varietals used in the region, all benefiting from the excellent hot weather and mineral rich terroir which characterizes the Douro valleys.
