Riesling

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. New York state has a wine history which stretches back to the mid-17th century, when Dutch settlers first began cultivating grape vines in the Hudson Valley. Sleek and focused, with quite steely acidity and wet-stone minerality on the barely medium-bodied palate. There's a blackberry aroma that makes this stand out in the crowd of Finger lakes rieslings. Slight austere in the long, straight finish. Made for long-term aging. Drink or hold.

Pristine, racy aromas of lime sherbet and green apple mark the nose of the 2022 Dry Riesling Argetsinger Vineyard, another fine effort from Ravines and owner-winemaker Morten Hallgren. It's a streamlined, medium-bodied Riesling that's unadorned by excess sugar (like all the dry Rieslings at Ravines, it carries three to four grams per liter of residual sugar). The zesty finish lingers in an impressively clean, refreshing fashion.
