The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. It’s well worth seeking out as a multi-bottle purchase, as it will offer loads of pleasure over the coming 15 years.

A full-bodied vintage for Ampodium, more generous and juicy than normal. Gently fibrous tannins as is the style, the fruit is very ripe, deep damson and plum with liquorice. Not long, with gently raised alcohol. Four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, limited new oak, natural yeasts, and as many stems as possible. The whole bunch give a potpourri element to the nose.
