Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Cote Rotie

Côte-Rôtie, an esteemed appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, stands as a beacon of Syrah excellence. What makes Côte-Rôtie unique is its dramatic topography, where steep terraced vineyards cling to the slopes of the Rhône River. The region's continental climate, combined with granite soils and ample sun exposure, contributes to the exceptional ripening of Syrah grapes, resulting in wines of unparalleled aromatic complexity and structure. Côte-Rôtie wines are characterized by their signature flavors of dark fruits, violets, and a distinctive smokiness. The appellation allows the co-fermentation of Syrah with a small percentage of Viognier, adding floral and aromatic dimensions to the wines. Producers like Guigal and Jamet exemplify Côte-Rôtie's commitment to tradition, crafting wines that showcase the synergy between terroir and grape variety. Relatively pale this year. It shows a floral expression of violets, and in the mouth it’s light-bodied, fresh and with good acidity. The tannins are much friendlier than La Landonne, it's quite a light and gentle Côte Blonde this year, but the balance is good even if the concentration is fairly light. This will drink well young. It saw four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, using limited new oak, natural yeasts, and as many stems as possible. The only single-vineyard bottlings in 2021 will be La Landonne and Côte Blonde - and that's if they are not eventually blended into Ampodium.

92-94 Slightly more open and expansive (as usual), the 2021 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde has a beautiful core of black raspberry-like fruits as well as plenty of floral, spicy, gamey nuances. Round, supple, and medium-bodied on the palate, it brings more charm than most in the vintage and is going to be a terrific Côte Rôtie that will shine with just short-term cellaring.

Fresh and aromatically intriguing, with high-pitched notes of blue and black fruit flecked with exotic floral elements and green herbs, all generously sprinkled with fresh-cracked white pepper. Shows the hallmarks of the cooler vintage, with nice roundness and richness on the palate, while leafy herbal character glides through a silky finish framed by iron and smoked mesquite. Drink now through 2038. 150 cases made.
