The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. More toasty at this stage than La Landonne, the 2023 Côte-Rôtie La Côte Blonde unwinds in the glass with aromas of spice, dark and blue berries, pepper, iris and violet, the oak still perceptible in its youth. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, it is seamless yet powerful, built around a deep, concentrated core of fruit framed by abundant, velvety tannins, concluding with an expansive, ethereal finish. Entirely vinified with whole clusters, its stem-inflected profile will require time in bottle to fully integrate and reveal its finest nuances.

Pencil shavings and blackberry add further aromatic breadth. The 2023 touches the medium to full-bodied palate with elevated flavor concentration, effortlessly balanced by uplifting acidity that brings verve and beguiling tension. The finish is extremely tight and linear, carrying through to a long, elegant close. This is outstanding.
