Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

96-99 Marked by hints of mint and herbal tea on the nose, the 2018 Cote Rotie Cote Brune is another terrific effort from this parcel of vines that was replanted in 2000. Raspberries and blueberries surge forward on the medium to full-bodied palate, building in richness and complexity on the firm, palate-coating finish.

Inky violet color. A deeply perfumed, mineral-tinged bouquet displays aromas of ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur, exotic spices and incense, which are complemented by building floral, smoky bacon and olive notes. Palate-staining blackberry, cassis, fruitcake, licorice and succulent herb flavors show excellent depth and become sweeter and more energetic as the wine slowly stretches out. The spice and floral qualities repeat emphatically on the mineral-driven finish, which hangs on with superb tenacity and mounting tannins.

This is just beginning to reveal its classic rose and dried flower aromas but is tightly coiled. There’s a lovely sense of density, but it's only a medium-bodied wine, despite the vintage. It has good acidity and sense of freshness and is particularly well balanced for 2018. Very long, with very fine, silky tannins and a long finish. A wine with great personality, great balance and classicism. The winemaking at Domaine Rostaing is now in the hands of René's son Pierre, and it follows the same format for all the Côte-Rôties: four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak, limited new oak, natural yeasts, and as many stems as possible.

95-97 The 2018 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune is more bloody and meaty, with a dense, powerful, concentrated style. It has a distinct iron character as well as classic Côte Rôtie spice and dried flowers. It’s certainly another masculine, concentrated, age-worthy wine from this team. This was another power-packed lineup from the Rostaing Family, and you can’t go wrong with any of these new releases. The 2017s show the sunny yet also elegant style of the vintage and have beautifully polished, ripe tannins. These wines offer pleasure even today but do your best to give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age, especially the single vineyard releases. Looking at the 2018s, these are largely in the same style yet have slightly more concentrated, structured profiles. My money is on the 2018s requiring slightly more bottle age, but I’ll report on those from bottle this time next year. In addition to the Côte Rôties, don’t miss a chance to try the Languedoc and Collines Rhodaniennes releases. Both represent terrific wines as well as value.
