The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

More black raspberry, camphor, graphite, peppered meat, and powdered rock notes emerge from the 2019 Côte Rôtie Le Vialliere, another flat-out incredible wine from this family. Much straighter and more focused than the more opulent La Landonne, it has a dense mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, full-bodied richness, and perfect balance. It’s singular, heavenly wine that needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years, and it should see its 30th birthday in fine form.

Powerful, mineral-accented aromas of ripe dark fruits, smoky bacon, incense and exotic spices. Potpourri and cracked pepper nuances build on the palate, which offers densely packed yet lively black and blue fruit and spicecake flavors that spread out and take a sweeter turn on the back half. Shows outstanding energy and sharp definition, finishing with strong energy, youthfully gripping tannins and a resonating floral note.

Stylish, floral nose, partly from the whole bunch, party from the site. Very pure, gentle and velvety with dark fruit and tight tannins. Good acidity, alcohol feels just about balanced and overall great finesse - straight and elegant. Touch of menthol and pine needles on the finish. The barrel I tasted might end up being blended into Ampodium - so this cuvée might never see the light of day! Let's hope it gets its own bottling. Drinking Window 2025 - 2033.
