On the palate, it’s full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a deep and layered core of concentrated fruit, succulent acids and a long, expansive finish.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two parcels in the Charmes and Mazoyères climats, has a lovely bouquet with blueberry, violet and light mineral notes that become more pronounced with aeration. There is a sensuality to this Charmes-Chambertin that I like. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, grippy tannin, a more masculine Charmes-Chambertin compared to its peers with a very grippy and structured finish. Hopefully it can fight its way through the new oak and come out the other side with more terroir expression because there is certainly good substance here.

A relatively deeply pitched nose displays ripe yet wonderfully fresh aromas of cassis, humus, underbrush, smoke and the classic sauvage notes of a good Charmes along with a similar hint of pomegranate. The middle weight flavors are, somewhat interesting, are not quite as concentrated as those of the Cazetiers though they are finer and I particularly like the succulent and caressing mouthfeel, all wrapped in a delicious, focused and lingering if slightly less robust finish. This is slightly more harmonious though it is still sufficiently firm as to require extended keeping.
