Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

One day, I would like to put Stella di Campalto’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino in a blind tasting with a handful of top-notch Burgundies and see how many people can pick this wine out. Sweet crushed flowers, savory herbs and cherries all waft from the glass. There is an ethereal, lifted, intensely perfumed quality to the 2008 that reminds me of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s wines. The 2008 isn’t a blockbuster, but it is very pretty. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.

Bright red berries, tobacco, smoke, incense and orange peel take shape in the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino. The most vibrant and chiseled of the three vintages I tasted on this trip, the 2008 is really starting to blossom nicely. The 2008 can be enjoyed today or cellared. There is a lot to look forward to here, that much is obvious.

Winery Notes

Out of the bottle, the wine shines with earth, leather, crushed berries and savory aromas supported by dried roses and a hint of citrus peel. Rich and complex but absolutely true to old school Sangiovese in color and class.
