Deep color of bronze with orange-peel and golden hues. Strawberry, earth, bark and orange with peach-pie aromas. Full-bodied and layered with lots of phenolics that give this Champagne and velvety and rich texture. It goes deep down. Open and beautiful. Exotic and flamboyant. So fresh and vivid. Just jumps out of the glass. So much energy. Drink now.

Varietal

Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Region

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Decanter

The proportion of Pinot Noir in Comtes de Champagne Rosé has tended to increase in recent years, as evidenced by this 2008 vintage, which is almost 70% Pinot Noir. There is 15% red wine, and the rest is Chardonnay. With notes of spices, black cherry, morello cherry and black fruit, the bouquet is impressively complex and delicious. On the palate, the vinous texture, fine bubbles, depth and complexity allow for a long, chalky, chiselled finish. This is a gastronomic Champagne rosé with great ageing potential.

Wine Advocate

Offering up a deep bouquet of blood orange, wild raspberry and plum, mingling with brioche and hints of Sichuan pepper, the 2008 Comtes de Champagne Rosé—disgorged in 2019 with a dosage of nine grams per liter—has developed nicely since I first tasted it that same year. Medium- to full-bodied, elegantly muscular and vinous, with a tauter core of fruit in the context of its siblings and laden with bright acids, it culminates in a long, chalky finish. Currently showing more depth than the 2012 and more incisiveness than the 2009, it stands out as one of the more complete renditions of this cuvée. A blend of 63% Pinot Noir and 37% Chardonnay, it derives from a harvest that took place in late September and extended into early October.

Wine Spectator

A harmonious rosé, seamlessly knitting a vivid spine of acidity and a streak of salinity with a fine, satiny mousse and flavors of wild strawberry, blood orange sorbet, pickled ginger and toast point. The lingering finish shows accents of dried thyme, smoke and graphite. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2033. 300 cases imported.

Vinous Media

The 2008 Comes de Champagne Rosé presents a classically austere façade. Crushed berry, mint, chalk and dried herbs emerge on the bouquet, and yet the wine remains very tight, even with aeration. The Comes Rosé has a track record of aging brilliantly. Today, though, I am not sure the fruit will ever fully emerge.
