A swathe of the delicate, lacy mousse wraps around a firm backbone of acidity, a finely balanced frame for this rich Champagne. Minerally layers of chalk, brine and oyster shell support flavors of dried cherry, crystallized honey, white truffle and smoked almond, a generous display that echoes on the well-cut finish. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Petit Meslier, Arbanne and Pinot Blanc. Disgorged July 2023. Drink now through 2036.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

A layered and complex wine with aromas of butter, white chocolate, wild strawberries, lemon peel and chalky minerality. Slightly honeyed on the palate, with fine bubbles, zesty acidity, toasty flavors and a focused finish. A blend of 32% pinot noir, 32% chardonnay, 32% meunier and 4% petit meslier. Disgorged July 2023. Drink or hold.

Sourced from riverine hillsides and reflecting the mosaic of four villages where the estate owns vines, it is a blend of equal parts Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, with the addition of approximately 4% heirloom varieties. Vinified in wood, it bursts from the glass with notes of pear and fresh bread crust mingling with grapefruit and green apple. Medium- to full-bodied, vinous yet incisive, it is giving and precise, with tangy acids and chalky back-end grip.

The NV Brut Nature Zero (2018 base) is a very pretty entry-level offering in this range. Dried pear, crushed flowers, spice and chamomile are nicely lifted. Clean mineral undertones lend notable freshness. This release is lifted and quite delicate. All the elements are very nicely balanced. Quintessential Tarlant all the way. Disgorged: October 6, 2025.

While it is certainly dry, this Champagne also has a rich, toasty character, with crisp acidity. It is tight and minerally, reveling in ripe fruit flavors. The wine balances some toasty age with delicious, citrus fruit.

Winery Notes

1/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Pinot Noir, 1/3 Pinot Meunier. This cuvée makes up 70-90% of Tarlant's production and "is my daily obsession", says Benoît Tarlant. Zero reflects the Tarlant emphasis on unadorned terroir, with no selected yeasts (as is true for all Tarlant wines), little sulfur and no dosage.
