Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Effe 55 comes from a two-hectare northeast-facing plot at 550 metres above sea level and includes the estate's oldest vines, which were planted in 1970 to Sangiovese clones from Montalcino. A mellow yet promising nose exhibits red currants laced with stony mineral and seductive truffles. Attractively textured with wood that frames rather than imposes, the tannins are firm and the acidity crisp. Blood orange lingers on the finish. Elegant and understated, this promises to express more with time.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Effe 55 is entirely Sangiovese raised for 18 months in tonneaux and botti of 32 hectoliters. Ripe and expressive, it displays a youthful crimson color and is flush with notes of red plum, toasted peppercorn, vanilla bean, and licorice. Full-bodied, it has good focus on the palate. offering juicy. pure fruit up front and through the mid-palate before becoming more savory and earth-toned, with elegant, polished tannins, a supple mouthfeel, and a ripe feel. It’s going to drink well over the next 8-10 years.

Winery Notes

This wine displays an intense aroma of red berries, even cherries under spirit, over notes of cocoa beans and well-integrated hints of oak. On the palace it is warm and powerful, and the cannic structure adds drinkability and elegance to the wine. At the same time, itsacidity and minerality grant for a long and refreshing finish. In order to preserve the natural features of this wine, only natural methods have been used for stabilization, and it has only been slightly filtered. Therefore, especially after a long ageing, a natural deposit might appear on the bottom of the bottle, which does not affect the quality of the wine.
